Orchids again | Micro Nikkor 60mm AFD

A shot of the 1st orchid to bloom this year.

The large white petal acts as a diffuser to provide a glorious glow to the flower. The B&W conversion has seemed to enhance the effect as has the f3.2 aperture.

Taken with the Nikon D300 and the Micro Nikkor 60mm AFD at 200 ASA, f3.2 and 1/500s in natural light.

An experiment in de-saturation. The orange-red lily looks a lot different when the color is desaturated. I liked the semi B&W effect.

Iris in bloom - II | Micro Nikkor 60mm

This spring has seen a profusion of flowers bloom on the terrace. Here is another iris in bloom, shot against the blue sky.

Riyadh - Dammam Highway

Cruising along the Riyadh - Dammam highway at  180 kmph on the fast lane sometime in the beginning of March last year while returning from our meeting at Riyadh. We managed to over the entire distance to Al-Jubail a little under 4 hours.

The 383 km stretch traverses through a desolate landscape with service stations about every 50 km apart.  The road-side is littered with burnt-out wrecks, an ominous reminder to the dangers of speeding.

A mountain ebony flower (Kanchan in Bengali) shot against the light. I liked the effect of the back-lit leaf and the pristine white flower against the high-key background.

Valentine's Day, Dhaka

My last trip to Dhaka, Bangladesh, coincided with the Bengali equivalent of the 1st day of spring (Poila Phalgun) and Valentine's Day.

The Valentine's Day - to our utter surprise - was bring celebrated with much more gusto that whatever I had seen before. Young boys and girls were going around with roses  and most of the malls and restaurants were choc-a-bloc with boys, girls and couples - all having a good time.

We were stuck in a bad jam on the way to Polton Bazar. The poor guy was on a rickshaw, next to our car, waiting to get to his girlfriend.

The picture was taken through the dirty rear window of the car. Hence, the spotty picture.
